I am a traveler, and love to visit other countries and learn about their cultures.
The Most Well-Traveled
When I was in Europe 7 years ago, one thing that I learned about some cultures is that it is actually expected for young people to travel when they graduated high school to experience other parts of the world. The most well-traveled young people that I met were the Aussies (Australians) and the Kiwis (those from New Zealand), closely followed by the Western Europeans. Not saying those are the only ones that travel, but that is the majority of the people that I met when I was backpacking through Western Europe.
Most Americans Never Leave Their Home State
I also learned that as a whole, Americans are the least traveling people in the developed world. Whatever their reasoning, I think that not experiencing other countries and immersing yourself in the culture a little is one of the reasons that we see ourselves as separate from others, isolating ourselves as a ‘country’ and (if I may be so bold as to say it ) make choices toward violence.
Travel the World, and Be Worldly
Those young people that had traveled to several countries knew more about the world and about the politics of other countries (and knew more about American politics than Americans… including me!), they had more compassion for the people because they had experienced the cultures, and they were more active in global causes and interested in making a difference in the world as opposed to just their small community…
and they were doing this mostly by changing themselves in response to their worldly experience.
Watching this video reminds me of traveling to places where you don’t speak the language and realizing that we are still more alike than we are different. That we are all people part of one big human family. It is a small world after all! I love to see the colors of the world, their architecture and their art, and their bright smiling faces finding joy in the moment. It makes me happy.
Follow Your Heart
I am also inspired by Matt’s ability to follow his heart, and get paid to travel the world and dance badly… and entice all of those other people to dance badly with ecstatic reckless abandon! I am so jazzed when I watch this, because no matter how badly they all dance, you can just see all the bright lights of their souls and how truly connected we all are!
Thanks Matt!
Where in the world have you danced? How did it change the way you see the world? Leave your comments below!
