I have been reading My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor. It is one of the best books I have ever read! First of all, I’m a bit of a nerd and love to learn about the body and how it works, especially the brain and nervous system.
This book offers that, and so much more for the un-nerdy who live a little more on the fringe… I live on both sides for sure!
The author is a brain scientist who experienced a stroke at the young age of 37. Her story is a unique and fascinating chronicle of her personal journey from ‘normalcy’ to perceived incapacitation and upward to a new life with a different view of the world and living in it, all through the eyes of a neuroanatomist who understands the workings of the brain. Now, after a complete ‘recovery’ (I put it in quotes because she did not return to being the person she was before, but a new Jill), she understands the brain to new heights, including the unique characteristics, reactions and amazing abilities of the right and left halves of our brains. When she lost the language, categorizing, and judging centers in her left hemisphere, she found herself immersed in her right hemisphere, in a mesmerizing bliss and peace of being One With the Universe.
A Great Inspiration.
Her writing is captivating, and even for those who aren’t nerds with a thirst for knowledge about the brain, you will be completely engaged by new understanding of what I call ‘communing with GOD’ by going within, communicating without words through body language and energy, how you judge and treat others, and your choices for living and responding to the world around you.
A Great Resource.
Another great aspect of this book is a vast array of resources for those who have suffered a stroke, who have a loved one who has, or who want a powerful reminder of the unlimited potential of the human brain. All we need is the belief that all things are possible… and of course love in our hearts.
